Congrats on 100 episodes! Glad you guys haven't burned out yet.

Question for the week: do you have any specific little things that drive you crazy in a show but nobody else? Personally I can't stand "web of lies" episodes building up to the inevitable embarrassing reveal.

With Guild Wars 2 I think the idea was "like WoW, but no subscription fees and more flexible class design." That might be enough to get me to pick it up though I don't play MMOs much anymore.

I was really glad Sakamichi no Apollon didn't get stuck on the pining relationship stuff I thought it would. Interested to hear your take on next week, which maybe goes a little *too* fast, and... meh. Space Brothers should have gotten half its 50 episodes, just too bored to keep up with it anymore until you guys tell me stuff starts happening. Maybe I'll go back and pick up Jormungand, sounds like that's a fun ride.

Actually, crest/banner never had single ship to ship combat as far as I can remember, aside from the attack ships vs the patrol ship in the first space battle most of it was big fleets duking it out.

When you think about it it's not that big of a suprise why most authors go for the "Boarding Parties" style of combat. It takes a lot of work and good writing for everything to make sense in the universe, in the case of banner they got around it by how their warp drives work.

Simply put, since the warp bubbles were independent from normal space the only way to attack someone was to get inside their warp bubble. This effectivly eliminated the "Million mile fighting" that real space combat would be like. And they explained that to the audience pretty well if one paid attention to that show.

Oh, I've followed Blue Steel for over a year now but you're right, sub combat is right up the same alley since the combat type is pretty similar.

Guess I've got another question then...
If Blue Steel gets an anime what studio would you like to handle it? It would be very sad if it got stuck with some low budget side team.

Episode 6 provides some context for that scene, I think, but I don't really believe that information excuses its prior presentation.

Thanks for linking that. When the topic of "who is exploiting who" got brought up, I honestly hadn't thought about it enough to make much of a point. That article helps.

Though if we're applying it to Fujiko specifically, things get a bit more complicated. Part of the problem is--with the different writers for each episode--Fujiko behaves a little differently. And episode 4 compounds the problem by dropping us into the story in media res; so we're missing some context for the opening scene.

We could be wrong! And in that case, I apologize for not catching the full implications and bringing them up. But, at the time, the scene with Zenigata didn't strike me as any more sinister than when Fujiko seduced other characters with sex.

Regardless, we still aren't too keen on how sex is used in the show. It's more a thing we bear with than something we actually like.

Also, Zenigata as written by Frank Miller just doesn't do it for me. You can have flawed characters without making them total creeps, and that whole blood oath deal was pretty dumb.

I'd never thought I'd say this, but: Bodacious Space Pirates is is some pro tier ****, I tell you what!

Also, anecdotal but, apparently the next eight (?) episodes are anime original and the show is up to book three of eight, so it looks like we might be getting a second season.

I don't think he was physically forcing her, but when he's telling her she'll have to be their undercover agent she says something like, "Didn't I do enough for you already?" and looks pretty displeased. The power dynamics in a situation like that are really squicky, because Fujiko is basically trying to make him happy so she can stay out of prison.

I don't think it occurred to any of us that Zenigata was forcing Fujiko to have sex with him. We all had the impression that Fujiko had taken the initiative, and the sex was her idea (basically seducing Zenigata).

I'll watch that section again to see if I totally interpreted that wrong.

SPOILERS![Spoiler]Rea's real mom is dead and that is her step-mom. Rea's mom looks exactly like her except she's disabled. Aria Sanka used to be a maid. She used to be a maid for Dan'ichirō and was trained under a long-standing tradition in the Sanka family that future heirs are to marry the best of the maids. I'll mention kodomo no jikan and see if you can figure the rest out for yourselves[/spoiler]

I'm surprised somebody else caught that. Lupin has its deep sided faults. But this is an interesting way to portray a certain characters flaws in order to better fully understand them.

I guess my questions in last week's comment thread didn't make it in time for this podcast's recording.

I was really surprised that you rated Lupin III #4 so highly. I thought the opera plot was incoherent and gave Fujiko nothing to do but stand around and watch. More importantly, I was really disturbed by Zenigata's actions. Forcing a prisoner to have sex with you in return for more favorable treatment is rape, guys. It gets prosecuted as such. It doesn't matter that it's Fujiko, and she uses sex as a weapon. I don't want to see a character like Zenigata treating a prisoner that way.

At this point I've decided that Mouretsu Pirates is the modern day Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Marika is never going to solve a problem with violence despite all the guns. That's not how the show rolls.

I like the diversity of opinion in recent reviews. I think it leads to a more spirited discussion where you better push each other to explain what you like or don't like in a show.
